On August 20, 1990 President George H. W. Bush selected PROJECTS Inc. (then the Community Service PROJECT) as the 227th “Point of Light,” citing PROJECTS unique ability to create opportunities for youth to serve in their community, whereby they can learn valuable vocation skills.
The Points of Light foundation, established by President George H. W. Bush upon taking office in January 1989, was created to engage all Americans in direct and consequential community service aimed at solving serious social problems. The Daily Point of Light Award was intended “to call every individual, group, and organization in America to claim society’s problems as their own by taking direct and consequential action; to identify, enlarge, and multiply successful initiatives, and to discover, encourage, and develop new leaders in community service, reflecting the President’s conviction that, “From now on in America, any definition of a successful life must include serving others.”
At the time, the Point of Light recognition was critical in raising PROJECTS’ visibility as an organization, and continues to be a standard that PROJECTS strives to live up to in each of its programs.
